Onuku Trampers Huts

Onuku is inside of the caldera that forms southern Banks Peninsula. It sits about 200 m above sea level with wonderful views up the Akaroa harbour towards Onawe Peninsula – the core of the extinct volcano.

When Jeff Hamilton was looking for a site to build the track hut in 1989 he selected the best view.  The accommodation is all purpose built and wonderfully sited. A perfect venue for your first dinner and sunset.

The Hamilton family have been on Banks Peninsula for over 150 years and nowadays they take people swimming with dolphins and run the hugely popular Onuku Farm Hostel and Campervan Park. The farmland is managed along with their neighbours’ the Gibbs’. Their sheep will be some of the first animals you meet as you start on the Banks Track.

Tristan Hamilton, Jeff’s son, and his partner, Julia,  live on the property and are your hosts for the first night of Banks Track. Also on site are the team that manage the Track Huts, Van Park , Hostel and Campsite.

There is mobile phone reception at Onuku.
